Do You Have a Solution for My Thinning Eyelashes?
If your eyelashes are thin or thinning, we have a solution. It’s made of bimatoprost 0.03% that was originally developed as a treatment for the eye disease glaucoma.
One unexpected — but positive — side effect that patients noticed was that their lashes grew in longer, thicker, and lusher.
FDA-approved Latisse® grows darker, thicker lashes because bimatoprost is derived from fatty acids that bind to receptors in the eyelashes. It’s thought that those receptors help develop and even regrow hair follicles.
At Aesthetics, by Dr. Lee, we want you to look good, but we also want to ensure that you receive products and treatments that are backed by clinical evidence. That’s why our expert, Dr. Luis Lee, prescribes Latisse for eyelash growth at our office in Granite Bay, California.
What can you expect when you use Latisse? Here’s a brief outline.
Apply only at night
Latisse is a prescription-only product, but you apply it yourself at home. You must remove your contact lenses (if you wear them) and any makeup, especially mascara. Make sure your eyelids are clean and dry.
You apply a single drop of Latisse to the sterile, single-use applicator, then very carefully and gently, brush the liquid on the lash margin on your upper lid.
Using a fresh, clean applicator, repeat the process for your other eye. Throw both applicators away. Never reuse an applicator.
If you get excess fluid farther up on your eyelid or on the skin below, gently blot it away with a tissue. If you’re sloppy with the application and don’t blot up excess, you could end up with lashes in areas where you don’t want them.
Leave your eyes alone
After you apply Latisse, don’t rub your eyes and don’t rinse your eyes, or you may remove the Latisse.
If you must wear contact lenses, wait 15 minutes before inserting them, but it’s best to apply Latisse right before bed.
Your lashes won’t grow overnight
Unlike Jack’s magic beanstalk, your lashes won’t grow overnight. Instead, you must be patient as your current lashes cycle through their phases of growth.
Latisse isn’t mascara, so it has no effect on your current lashes. Instead, it affects the quality and quantity of new lashes that you grow.
Be consistent and patient as you await the results. You must apply the solution to both eyes every night for at least 16 weeks before you notice the difference, although you may see results as quickly as 30 days after first using Latisse.
What you can expect
Once Latisse starts to affect your eyelash growth, you should see a significant difference in the quality and quantity of your lashes. Patients surveyed noticed that their lashes were, on average:
- 106% fuller
- 25% longer
- 18% darker
Apply Latisse only to your lashes. Although it’s safe for your eyes, Latisse in the eye may, in rare cases, darken the brown pigments in your iris permanently.
You must continue to use Latisse
Once you’ve been using Latisse for 16 weeks, you should see your full results: darker, thicker, lusher, and more bountiful lashes.
But after you’ve achieved your goal, continue to use Latisse. Your eyelashes fall out and regrow continuously. If you don’t apply the solution daily, your new lush lashes will eventually fall out, leaving you with the same skimpy lashes you started with.
Is Latisse right for you?
Latisse isn’t appropriate for everyone. You shouldn’t use Latisse if you’re:
- Pregnant
- Currently nursing
- Allergic to its ingredients
Of course, if your eyes start to feel itchy, red, or irritated, stop using Latisse, but side effects are rare. It’s so safe that children who’ve lost their eyelashes to alopecia or cancer treatments can use it under adult supervision.
