Upneeq Q & A

What causes eyelid drooping?

Blepharoptosis is the medical term used to describe drooping eyelids. It affects the upper eyelid and can develop in one or both eyelids in children and adults. The aging process is a common cause of drooping eyelids. As the years pass, the skin and muscles that make up the eyelid begin to weaken and stretch. Previous eye surgeries, injuries, or disease can also cause or contribute to blepharoptosis. The condition can be an aesthetic concern, causing your eyes to appear smaller or create a sleepy-looking effect. However, blepharoptosis can also interfere with normal vision if the lids begin to droop low enough.

How can Upneeq help with drooping eyelids?

Not long ago, the only real way to correct blepharoptosis was through surgery. The muscles that hold the eyelid in place can be surgically tightened to create a more open, normal eyelid position. However, some patients experience issues with surgery, including an inability to fully close their eyes after the procedure.

Upneeq offers the chance to improve eyelid contouring without surgery. The treatment uses eyedrop medication to lift drooping eyelids and restore a more normal appearance and function. The medication works by causing the tiny muscles in your eyelid to contract, which effectively shortens those muscles and lifts your lid.

What is the treatment process like when using Upneeq?

The first step is to come in and meet with Dr. Lee to determine if Upneeq is a good treatment option for your needs. After an examination and a discussion of the changes you’ve noticed in your eyelids, Dr. Lee explains whether Upneeq is a good fit, as well as what to expect during treatment.

If you are prescribed Upneeq, completing treatment is simple and easy. The medication comes in single-use, one-drop vials. You simply wash your hands, cut open the foil packaging, and place one drop of the medication into the affected eye. Some people only need to treat one eyelid, while others rely on Upneeq to lift both of their upper lids.

If you are using any other topical eye medications, it’s important to wait at least 15 minutes before administering other treatments. You should also wait a few moments for your eyesight to clear after placing the drops, and also avoid driving or performing any other potentially dangerous tasks.
